“ People who don’t experience schizophrenia can’t really understand it. It’s hard to imagine what it’s like to have constant hallucinations and hear voices ” says Serguei.
Diagnosed years ago, Serguei once believed that schizophrenia condemned him to a life of isolation and suffering. But over time, he discovered that his diagnosis was not the end of his story.
“Recovery is a long and difficult process. It can feel like there’s no way out. Learning to live with a severe mental health condition is a daily challenge, but with help and determination, it’s possible to get better. The worst mistake is to stop trying.”
A Path Filled with Hope
The support Serguei received played a crucial role in his recovery. He highlights the importance of the care teams and activities offered at the Institute: “ Without my care team’s support, I might not be here today. The people who took care of me always believed in my potential. ”
Little by little, Serguei found ways to regain his confidence. Through various activities during his hospitalization, he rediscovered his abilities and his desire to take on new challenges. “ Slowly, I started to believe in myself. I realized I was capable of fully committing to a project and following through. For the first time, I was proud of myself. ”
Taking Control of His Life
With this newfound confidence—and with support from the Foundation—Serguei made the decision to go back to school and complete his high school diploma. This achievement gave him the courage to take another major step: moving into his own apartment. The transition was made easier thanks to the Foundation, which provided essential supplies and a starter kit to help him begin this new chapter with dignity.
Today, Serguei has found a sense of peace he once thought was lost forever. His journey is an inspiring reminder that even in the darkest moments, hope can be rekindled. His story embodies our mission and our reason for being: L’essence même de notre mission. Everyone deserves to be supported, believed in, and guided toward a brighter future.
